The History of Shosei-en
Shosei-en is an outlying temple grounds (annex) of Higashi Honganji Temple.真宗本廟Newspaper
Shosei-en Garden was founded when the 13th head priest of Higashi Honganji Temple received a donation of land from the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and began developing the land as a retirement residence when Shonin retired in 1653 (Shoo 2).宣如Senyo
After the 14th head priest, it was developed into a place where people could enjoy poetry, the tea ceremony, Noh and Kyogen, and for a long time it served as a retirement home for successive head priests and as a guest house to welcome important guests of Higashi Honganji. 琢如Takunyo
In 1936 (Showa 11), it was designated a national site of scenic beauty as a Buddhist temple garden filled with literary tastes.
Currently, it is open to the public, and many people visit the garden, and in recent years it has been widely used for tea ceremonies, various exhibitions, art fairs, and as a location for filming TV dramas and movies.
